My Aha moment: Toxic Stress and ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) influence the behavior of our students in unpredictable ways. With extra supports, awareness, and understanding, educators can help by giving time to compassion when it is most needed.

January 29, 2019 WCPSS Master Leadership Symposium: Aaron Marcin, Lead Mine Elementary School: Tiered Instruction Tied to Equity
My Aha moment: Core instruction recognizes that academic and behavioral practices are related. PD is tied to SIP plan (NCSTaR indicators). Talk about it with staff. Intervention/coaching teams needs to meet frequently with data: Are learning outcomes clear and predictable before instruction starts? Did you use the purchased resources?
Does the space reflect team learning/core instruction? Get rid of the old! Climate: feelings. Do they feel loved? Are you ready to get uncomfortable. Culture: actions
Climate is easier to assess and turn/change. Culture requires a change in actions.
Dr. Kinsey-Barker: Have courage for our students!

January 26, 2019 EdCamp Equity at West Cary Middle School; Superintendent Kathy Moore; Keynote Speaker: Ronda Bullock
My Aha moment: What are my larger group identities? How are they connected to systemic power/privilege? How do I disrupt inequities? Recognize, own, and accept that we are a part of the problem (knowingly or unknowingly). How does the school system contribute to a (un)healthy community? Each individual student as an individual every day; Restorative Justice. WCPSS Equity course: Seeing White (I've signed up!) Leadership: Use the data. Which teachers are writing referrals? What additional support do they need?
