As a servant leader with a heart of all students, Beth Gulewich serves Terrell Lane Middle School in Franklin County Schools as the 6th- & 7th-grade Assistant Principal. A full day makes a full heart! She starts the day connecting with colleagues about coverage and substitute teacher roles, supervising bus riders and assisting bus drivers, and then moving into greeting and supervising students during breakfast and in classrooms. Supporting teaching and learning in classrooms is her first priority along with helping students navigate conflict resolution and behavior expectations. What really makes her smile is a kind word or hug from students and faculty alike. Let's exude hope, collaborate, challenge, and celebrate each other every day!
In the school year 2018/19, Beth was engaged in her full-time internship at Broughton High School. As part of the administrative team, she worked with students and teachers supporting their educational endeavors and was a presence in classrooms, hallways, on the bus loop and athletic fields each and every day. She earned her Masters in School Administration in May 2019 from NC State University as a NC Principal Fellow Class 24.
Beth earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in German Language and Literatures from the University of Oregon and holds both a K-12 German and a ESL teaching license. She was nominated by her colleagues as Teacher of the Year at Broughton High School (2015-16), where she taught German for 16 years. Beth has been fortunate to return to the classroom and school-based teacher leadership during the 2019/20 school year. She would not trade her experience with engaging students virtually with live instruction during Spring & Fall 2020 under the COVID restrictions for anything. Visit the Teaching Under COVID button for her insights.
Beth's educational experience is expansive. She worked briefly as a first-grade Teacher Assistant at Adams Elementary. She split her German teaching assignment in Wake County with Carnage Middle School and Broughton High School for four years. She continued leading the German Program at Broughton High School for an additional 12 years. She has also taught German 101-103 as a Graduate Teaching Fellow for two years at the University of Oregon. She has worked with students ages 6 (first-graders) through 24 (freshmen and sophomores at the university).
Dedicated to supporting fellow teachers, Beth served as the World Languages Department Chair at Broughton HS and served as President of the NC-American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) (2012-14) and on the Executive Council of the AATG (2016-2018). She currently serves on the Awards Committee and as co-webmaster for NC-AATG. She also volunteers as a board member on the Programs Committee at the Wade Edwards Learning Lab. Beth is an enthusiastic traveler who believes in promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation through cultural exchange and ass co-chair of the Rostock Committee for Raleigh Sister Cities for many years.
